Moroccan football has prospered in recent years at all levels. The national team's heroic performance in FIFA World Cup-2022 started a series of astonishing achievements.
[1] The accomplishments of Moroccan football are the result of a long-term project which started with the National Sport Conference in 2008, where King Mohammed VI launched a huge project to modernize Moroccan sports. The country established Mohammed VI Football Academy at a cost of $13 million, aiming mainly at developing football at the national level by identifying and training talents. The academy provides education as well as sporting development, with study spaces, player lodgings and physical preparation zones.
[2] In addition to youth infrastructure, Morocco invested heavily in local clubs and stadiums. This has turned the country into a top destination for major football tournaments, such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco is co-hosting alongside Spain and Portugal. To ensure complete success, the government has initialized an infrastructure package of more than $8.7 billion to upgrade airports, hotels, and railways connecting the host cities.
[3] Moreover, Morocco shares its sporting expertise with neighboring African nations. Through cooperation agreements, dozens of African national teams use Moroccan pitches for training and hosting official matches. This strategy strengthens historical ties and enhances football across the continent, showing that Morocco is a leader and an example to follow in sport diplomacy.
[4] These sport investments have brought immense economic and social benefits. Organizing international matches creates job opportunities for the youth, fills local hotels, and boosts local businesses. For this reason, the Morocco-2030 Foundation was launched to oversee the legacy of these developments, ensuring they generate sustainable profits and long-term infrastructure improvements for future generations.
